Gan-Cho Noh Play "Okina"
"Okina" is the earliest Noh play in Japan, performed on the Noh stage of Kasuga Shrine in Sasayama from around 0:20 a.m. on January 1 every year to herald the beginning of a new year in Tambasasayama. Okina" is said to have its origins in sarugaku, and is performed in celebration to pray for peace under heaven, long life, and fertility. It was designated as a National Important Cultural Property in 2003.
