The stage was built in 1861 by Aoyama Tadayoshi, the 13th lord of the Sasayama domain. It is said that the Noh stage was modeled after the one in the Honmaru of Edo Castle, and at the time of its construction, it was reputed to be the most magnificent Noh stage west of Hakone. A first-rate Noh performer performs outdoors under the cherry blossoms. Amidst falling cherry petals, the world of Noh and Kyogen unfolds in an ethereal manner on this traditional Noh stage.
