Mount Matsuo, Bunpoji Temple

Founded in 645 by the sage Hodo, the temple was initially established as Choryuji, with Sho Kannon Bodhisattva enshrined as the principal deity. However, it was destroyed during the Tenryaku Rebellion. In the Showa era, under the reign of Emperor Hanazono, it was rebuilt, and the Senju Kannon Bodhisattva, crafted by Jikaku Daishi, was brought from Mount Hiei. In 1317, upon the completion of the temple complex, it was renamed Bunpoji with an imperial grant. Since then, both principal deities have been enshrined. At its peak, the temple housed 21 buildings, but after overcoming the devastation of Mitsuhide Akechi’s Tamba campaign, it now comprises three sub-temples: Shinnyoin, Daisho-in, and Kanmyoin.
