The "Tanba Pottery Festival," a beloved autumn tradition in Tambasasayama City, was held in full scale. Celebrating over 800 years of Tanba pottery history, the festival attracted numerous pottery enthusiasts and tourists from both inside and outside the city, bringing great energy to the Konda district. Visitors enjoyed a variety of events, including sales of works from around 50 kilns, hands-on pottery experiences, and kiln tours—fully immersing themselves in the profound world of Tanba pottery.
The Konda area, known as the production center of Tanba pottery, is home to many kilns. The skills of pottery have been passed down through generations, with artisans continuing to protect tradition while taking on new challenges.
A World of Tanba Pottery Where Tradition Meets Innovation
Tanba pottery is known as one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns and is characterized by its simple yet powerful aesthetic. At this festival, in addition to traditional pieces, many works featuring new techniques and modern designs were showcased—highlighting the creativity of the artisans.
This year especially, contemporary pieces by young ceramic artists and practical tableware for everyday use gained attention. Visitors also had the rare opportunity to witness potter’s wheel demonstrations and see a climbing kiln up close, offering a deeper understanding of the history and craftsmanship behind Tanba pottery.
Connecting the Future of Tanba Pottery: Interaction Between Makers and Visitors
Visitors shared their thoughts, saying things like, “It was great to hear directly from the makers while purchasing,” and “I could feel the warmth of Tanba pottery by holding it in my hands.” Many felt a deep appreciation for the passion and skills behind each piece.
Artisans from the Konda area also expressed their hope: “This is a valuable opportunity to introduce Tanba pottery to younger generations and people from afar.”
Looking ahead, they aim to further promote Tanba pottery through online sales and international outreach.
