Recommended for both first-time visitors and returning guests. At the 49th performance, over half of the audience were first-time viewers, who shared their delight with comments like, 'The elegance of the dance was breathtaking,' and 'I want to attend again.' For our loyal patrons, we will present a celebratory Noh performance by Living National Treasure Bunzo Ohtsuki, a familiar and cherished performer. This spring marks the first performance in three years. Enjoy the mystical world of Noh under the swirling cherry blossoms.
About Activity
The Noh performances on the Kasuga Shrine Noh Stage had nearly ceased by the Meiji era, and the stage was no longer used in its traditional form. However, with the dedication of local volunteers, the first Sasayama Kasuga Noh performance was held in 1973 (Showa 48) to revive this event at Kasuga Shrine. Despite a few pauses over the years, the performance has been held almost annually since then. This year, with the Tambasasayama International Expo taking place, marks the memorable 50th performance, which will feature a special celebratory Noh performance.

Sasayama Noh Executive Committee
The Kasuga Shrine Noh Stage was built in 1861 (Bunkyu 1) through the donation of Tadataka Aoyama, the 13th lord of the Sasayama Domain. Tadataka was a Noh enthusiast, hosting Noh performances even before the stage’s construction. After serving in the esteemed position of senior councilor (Rōjū) in Edo for four years, he designed this Noh stage based on the Noh stage in the main keep of Edo Castle. At the time of its construction, it was reputed to be the most splendid Noh stage west of Hakone. The first Sasayama Kasuga Noh performance was held in 1973 (Showa 48), and despite a few pauses, it has reached its 50th performance in Reiwa 7 (2025).
